Doctors are well-trained to diagnose and treat disease. Too often, though the cause of the disease is not addressed. Our “disease care” system is so effective at covering symptoms that much of the time simple, common-sense factors that truly lead to great health are ignored. Many times, treating diseases with pharmaceuticals can make the cause of the problem even worse. Let’s face it: medications are just poisons with a desirable side effect. I’m sure you will agree that poisoning yourself to health is not the best approach when there are effective alternatives.

So what is the solution to this “health care” crisis? How about three simple things anyone can do to improve their health? These are by no means the only things you need to do to get and stay healthy, but they will start you on the road to your healthy future.

Tip #1. Detoxify

Detoxification is a very popular subject in the natural health field these days, and for good reason. Anything you can do for your body that decreases the total toxic load from the food you eat, water you drink, air you breathe and the environmental pollutants you encounter every day is very beneficial. Detoxification simply means getting rid of the things that should not be in your body. Basically, that is cleaning up and clearing out toxins. Something that everyone should do. But how do you do it?

It turns out that toxins hide out in your fatty tissue. That means one of the simplest ways to start the detoxification process is to lose the excess fat! If the largest organ in your body is skin, then your skin can contain an enormous amount of fat, because fat cells can expand to many times their normal size and act as a storage depot for health-stealing toxins. It takes an enormous amount of nutrients at the cellular level to help these fat cells break down and eliminate the fats and toxins they contain.

Of course, the total amount of fat in your body is ultimately determined by the amount of calories taken in as food versus the calories consumed by activity. Avoiding processed foods, junk foods and integrating more fruits, vegetables and whole grains into your diet, and drinking plenty of water, are all essential for healthy glowing skin. Along with consuming a plant based diet, high quality skin care products can also facilitate the process of toning and firming the skin, and even help to decrease inflammation. That means healthier skin so you can look younger as you continually “clean up” the largest organ of your body.


Tip #2. Alkalize

If the No. 1 tip is detoxify, No. 2 would have to be to alkalize. Your body is either acidic or alkaline, and an acidic body is a setup for just about every kind of disease. Free radical damage flourishes in an acidic body, and can lead to aging and all of the chronic degenerative diseases associated with aging. What causes an acidic body? The list will sound familiar: Junk foods, excess sugar, fried foods, and even stress can cause acidification and set you up for health problems. So how do you avoid acidification? ALKALIZE!


Animal based foods, meats and dairy are all acidifying, whereas plant-based foods, such as fruits and vegetables are alkalizing. It turns out the “superfoods,” when it comes to alkalizing, are green foods. And the deeper green fruits and vegetables have even more alkalizing power. Green foods are loaded with minerals, especially magnesium and potassium, which are not consumed in adequate amounts in the Western diet.

Today is the best day to start to become a lean, green, disease-fighting machine. Choose salads every chance you can, especially ones made with darker lettuces, such as romaine. A dehydrated body is an acidic body, so drinking plenty of water is the essential to keeping your body alkaline. I recommend drinking half your weight in pounds in ounces of purified water each day. So if you weigh 150 pounds, you need 75 ounces of water daily. When your body stays alkaline, it is much easier for the immune system to do its job of keeping you healthy.

Unless you are eating two or three fruits, four to six vegetables, and five to 11 servings of whole grains, which were grown in non-depleted soils without the use of toxic pesticides and fertilizers, 365 days a year, it is unlikely that you are getting all the essential nutrients you need for good health. Essential nutrients are vitamins and minerals your body cannot make; they must be obtained from the diet. Unfortunately, even if you are eating a large number of fruits, vegetables and whole grains daily, those foods just do not contain the level of nutrients they used to before modern farming and food processing took their toll on nutrition.

How do you start to supplement your diet? There are so many products out there and so much information, but the starting point is really simple. Begin by taking a balanced, complete multiple vitamin and mineral supplement every day. This is not an option if you want to enjoy great health.

What would you say is the most important nutrient to your health? The answer is: the one you’re missing! Of course it is, but which one is that? I don’t know. You could spend hundreds of dollars trying to find out, or for a fraction of that amount, you could give your body all the known essential nutrients it requires each day in the form of a daily multiple vitamin.
